12 Rules for Life - good moments, wandering tangents

1 min read

I’ve listened to a lot of Peterson’s work on YouTube, and he’s at his best when he’s talking about psychology and meaning. After all that watching, I figured I’d better try the actual book.

Overall this was a good read, but he did go on some tangents that I found repetitive or unrelated. The religious ones were the main offenders. That’s what keeps it at a 4/5 for me rather than higher.

The highlights were his personal stories. I really enjoyed those, and there were some great moments throughout the book that made me think. The rule that stuck with me most was to treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping. That said, it didn’t change anything I actually do day to day.

That’s also why I probably wouldn’t hand this book to anyone. If you already know Peterson from YouTube and like his takes on psychology and meaning, the book delivers more of that, tangents included. If you’re new to him, start with the talks instead.
