Never Split the Difference - negotiation lessons that read like a thriller
1 min read
This is one of those books that everyone should read and would measurably improve your life.
I didn’t pick it up for any negotiation in particular. But I’ve never seen such an in depth, logical approach to negotiation based on experience. The book manages to deliver its information wrapped up in stories of hostage negotiations, which make it feel like reading fiction at times.
The structure works well. It’s laid out to discuss negotiation techniques which are to be memorised and practiced, dotting each chapter with anecdotes and sources to back up the claims. It draws on amazing sources like Daniel Kahneman’s Thinking, Fast and Slow, and discusses the landscape of negotiation literature such as the book “Getting to Yes”. Kahneman’s book is more about human psychology and less about negotiation, so for the negotiation itself, this is the better pick.
Overall this is 100% worth a read, and an easy 5/5. I’d struggle to name anyone I’d warn away; it really is great for everyone. Everybody has to negotiate; for a higher salary, for more time or for a discount. This book will help you get the best deal possible.
